Programs
The ground-breaking for CalArts' current campus took place on May 3, 1969, as part of the Master Plan for a new planned community in the Santa Clarita Valley of Los Angeles. However, construction of the new campus was hampered by torrential rains, labor shortages, and the Sylmar Earthquake in 1971. As a result, the first combined campus for the Institute started at the former Villa Cabrini Academy (now the home of Woodbury University) in July 1970.

Completed for $123 million, it was designed by Diamond and Schmitt Architects on a site granted jointly to Emily Carr University, Simon Fraser University and the British Columbia Institute of Technology. An introduction to conceptual, technical and disciplinary approaches that includes 2D, 3D and 4D disciplines. This studio course focuses on the understanding and articulation of core values shared across contemporary art, design, and media disciplines. Foundation Core emphasizes practices and concepts that provide a solid platform for any of the degree-focused studio cores offered in the second semester. A subject may not be counted at both the GCE (A Level) and the GCSE (O Level) levels. Every program within the Institute requires that applicants send in an artist's statement, along with a portfolio or audition to be considered for admission. The institute has never required an applicant's SAT or other test scores, and does not consider an applicant's GPA as part of the admission process without the consent of the applicant .
The Financial Aid + Awards Office at Emily Carr University of Art + Design offers information and resources to help fund your undergraduate or graduate education through internal and external sources. As Emily Carr is an accredited degree-granting institution, you will also have access to many international funding agencies. If you are a United States citizen you can apply for Stafford Loans to attend Emily Carr. International students planning to study here need to secure financing through their home country. Candidates who meet Emily Carr’s visual art portfolio and academic admissions requirements but do not meet the minimum IELTS score and whose IELTS score is not lower than 5.5 in any skill area may apply for the Creative Art Pathway program.

In 2008, by government decree, Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design achieved university status to become Emily Carr University of Art and Design. The university began offering an increased number of academic courses in art history, design history, English, humanities, media history, science and the social sciences. You should submit 10 to 15 examples of your most recent work that best represents your diversity of interests and skills.
